Deep Tissue Massage (Back to Top)

Deep Tissue Massage is a form of bodywork that aims to relieve tension in the deeper layers of tissue in the body. I use various techniques with my hands, knuckles, and elbows and apply focused pressure on “problem areas” or “trigger points” in the body. Deep Tissue Massage is a highly effective method for releasing chronic stress areas due to misalignment, repetitive motions, and past lingering injuries. Due to the nature of the deep tissue work, open communication during the session is crucial to make sure you don’t get too uncomfortable. Keep in mind that soreness is pretty common after the treatment, and that plenty of water should be ingested to aid with the flushing and removal of toxins that will have been released from the deep tissue during the session.

Sports Massage (Back to Top)

Sports Massage is a type of massage designed for highly active people who engage in athletics.  Engaging in sports is harsh on the body and can often lead to injuries in both the short and long term.  Sports Massage enhances performance and prolongs a sports career by helping to prevent injury, reduce pains and swelling in the body, relax the mind, increase flexibility, and dramatically improve recovery rates.  Sports Massage is also highly effective in aiding the rapid recovery of an athlete from an injury by encouraging greater kinesthetic awareness and in turn promoting the body’s natural immune function.  A variety if PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) stretches are incorporated into each session.

Pregnancy Massage (Back to Top)

Pregnancy Massage is a form of bodywork designed specifically for pregnant women.  Pregnancy is a time in which a woman’s body endures tremendous stress due to dramatic physical, mental, and emotional changes.  Using various techniques specifically for the new mother, Pregnancy Massage helps alleviate discomforts experienced throughout the pregnancy.  The benefits are profound, including emotional support, the reduction of joint pain due to extra weight and postural imbalance, improved breathing and relaxation, and relief from uncomfortable digestive issues. **Massage during the first trimester is not recommended.  During these three months, the chance of miscarriage is at its highest and we prefer to avoid performing massage for the safety of Mom and baby.

Reiki (Back to Top)

Reiki  (ray-key) arised from an ancient Japanese healing art, a system for the laying-on of hands.  Reiki means universal life force, the energy that is within us and all around us.  A reiki treatment session is a non-invasive, hands-on energy transfer technique which assists in boosting well being and recovery, strengthens the body's natural self-healing mechanism ultimately helping to establish optimum mental, emotional, and physical health.   Reiki is based on the simple fact that we are all a form of energy. Energy flows within us and every aspect of our being.  When we are experiencing low levels of energy (fatigue, illness, pain, depression, anxiety...), reiki is a way of renewing weakend cells leaving us feeling revived,  rejuvenated and grounded.

Esalen Style / Swedish Combo (Back to Top)

This is what makes massage therapy an art form!

Swedish Massage combined with Esalen approach can have a very profound affect on many levels.  Not only does it feel pleasing to the body, but it allows the release of deeply held emotions (that are often stored within the body)  I find this to be the most beneficial session for my clients.

Massage is a perfect elixer for good health, but this form of massage can also provide an intergration of body & mind.  By producing a meditative state or heightenend awareness of living in the present moment, Esalen massage can provide emotional & spiritual balance, bringing with it true relaxation & peace.  This is my goal so even if you are used to a more clinical type massage, I strongly suggest you give Esalen Massage a try!

                   Facts about Esalen Massage Style
While Swedish Massage & Esalen Massage strokes are similar, the philosophy and intent are quite different. Swedish massage was developed as part of gymnastics, Esalen as part of Gestalt psychotherapy.       http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gestalt_therapy

Swedish seeks to affect specific muscles & joints to relieve pain and increase mobility. Esalen does this but also seeks to help the person live more comfortably in his or her own body while integrating body, mind and spirit into a more harmonious whole person.

The strokes and manipulations of Swedish massage are for a specific therapeutic benefit. Esalen massage is set apart as a unique style because it also reflects an attitude about touching, caring, energy awareness and emotional, spiritual healing besides just physical manipulation.

Part of the attitude of Esalen is that touching is a basic need, as essential as air, food or water: that caring about others is natural; that getting in touch with one's own body leads to a more effective way of loving and relating to others, and that healing comes from within as well as from the outside.

****Strokes & techniques are long, flowing and connected from head to toe. A combination of techniques, varying in pressure & percussion ,will be applied to all superficial and some deeper muscles from their point of origin to their point of insertion.  This is a very thorough massage session so one would need to be comfortable with this in order to enjoy the process.  Yes, private areas are draped and no this is not a "sensual massage" ****

NOTE:  Contrary to what some may think, Esalen Institute no longer offers mutually nude massages, and have not for many years...nor do I!  My sessions are always about the value of touch and nothing more.

At the heart of the session is an sense of empowering each individual to regain a sense of harmony, reverence, and balance, and to awaken inner resources for healing.

Lomi Lomi (Back to Top)

Lomi Lomi is an ancient form of Hawaiian massage.  Lomi Lomi simply means, “massage”     A fundamental assumption of Huna is that everything seeks harmony and everything seeks love. So how does this relate to massage? Perhaps this can best be understood by one of the alternate names for Lomi Lomi, and that is "Loving Hands" massage. The reason for this is that it works gently yet deeply into the muscles with continuous, flowing strokes, totally nurturing the body and, enabling the recipient to relax, give in and simply be. So whilst technique is an important part of the massage and associated healing, much of the work is done by love, with the focus of the practitioner on the client being deep and complete, using loving hands and a loving heart. The massage is given in fluid, rhythmic motion using the forearms as well as the hands. Some people have described this as feeling like gentle waves moving over the body. Another feature is that different parts of the body may be massaged at the same time, for example one arm or hand may be working on a shoulder and the other hand may be working on the opposite hip. This assists the recipient in totally relaxing as it is impossible or at least extremely difficult for the brain to focus on the two different areas at once. By not working on areas in isolation a deep sense of balance and harmony is achieved.  As a massage practitioner, I am focused on caring for your body and by, using intuition, each session is what is "right" for you, the client. The client on the table is not viewed as someone to be fixed, but a being to be returned to harmony and balance. It is important to remember that the practitioner does not heal but is the facilitator for the healing. This flowing with total energy, using the long continuous, flowing strokes, combined with the very loving touch, relaxes the entire being, assisting in a letting go of old beliefs, patterns and behaviors that cause limitations and which are stored in the cells of our body. People generally think of memory, beliefs, our "programming", as being stored in our head, in our brain. This is not the case, this memory and other programming is in fact stored in all the cells of our body. Because the practitioner works intuitively, a massage may be slow and very relaxing or at times it may be a little faster and therefore more invigorating and enlivening to the body. Sometimes the recipient may experience an emotional release as the massage can release and shift negative emotions, negative beliefs and other "stuff" that has been stored in the cells of the body, with the healing effects of the massage continuing long after the massage is over.

A selection of luxurious coconut based oils from Hawaii are used during each session.

A HOT BEACH STONE version of this massage is also available!
